Journey Through God's Word: The Gospel According to Matthew

Background

• The first Gospel/Book of the New Testament.

• Written by Matthew, also called Levi.

• Matthew was a Jew who collected taxes for the Roman government.

This Gospel presents Christ as the Son of David and the Son of Abraham. More than any other Gospel writer, Matthew connects events and utterances in the life of our Lord with Old Testament prophecies.

We are going to outline our Journey Through God's Word: The Gospel According to Matthew into seven divisions:

1. The King Introduced (Chapters 1 - 4)

2. The Principles of the King (Chapters 5 - 7)

3. The Authority of the King (Chapters 8 - 12)

4. The Mysteries of the Kingdom (Chapter 13)

5. The Ministry of the King (Chapters 14 - 23)

6. The Prophesied Return of the King (Chapters 24 - 25)

7. The Death and Resurrection of the King (Chapters 26 - 28)

Since Christ, The King is apparently the theme of Matthew's Gospel, we are first going to define what it means to be a king. By definition, a king is the male ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth - ruler, sovereign, monarch, crowned head. Christ, The King of Kings!

Matthew’s major theme is that Jesus Christ came to establish the kingdom of heaven on earth. Matthew used the phrase “kingdom of heaven” thirty-three times in his Gospel. His genealogy of Jesus Christ reveals the Savior’s prophetic and divine right to reign as our King.
